David is a Principal at Mahony Horner Lawyers and leads the Employment Law team. David was formerly a Director of Cullen Law – The Employment Law Firm.

David has over 30 years employment law experience in New Zealand and overseas. His expertise is recognised by his peers. For six years he was appointed to the Employment Law Committee of the New Zealand Law Society. Prior to that he served on the Workplace Relations and Employment Law Sub-committee of the Law Institute of Victoria, Australia.

David has focused his practice on employer clients. He has acted for several household names such as Telstra, Toyota and Hewlett Packard in Australia and the Canterbury District Health Board and Fulton Hogan in New Zealand. Examples of his work include:

  • Coordinating the provision of employment advice for the restructuring of a subsidiary of a major telecommunication company with businesses in many countries in Asia.
  • Advising the Japanese parent company of a major car manufacturer on the outsourcing of part of its operations and on the establishment of a research and development centre.
  • Defending a discrimination and sexual harassment complaint brought by a professor against a university and 10 senior university staff.

Calum has specialised in employment law since he graduated with first class honours from Waikato University in 2014. He has extensive experience in complex employment matters which cross into other areas of law. He has experience in State Services enquiries, Parliamentary Select Committee enquiries, and Serious Fraud Office investigations.

Calum is an expert in matters of diplomatic and sovereign immunity. He appeared as junior counsel in two recent cases where diplomatic immunity was successfully invoked. He regularly advises Embassies and High Commissions on matters of employment law.

Calum pays close attention to the needs of clients and enjoys tailoring strategies to achieve desired outcomes. He is particularly mindful of conducting work to ensure clients maintain their reputations as far as possible.

In his spare time Calum is a keen diver, diving around Wellington’s coastline year round.

Chris Scarrott

Born and raised in Hawke’s Bay, Chris graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in 2014 with an LLB and a BA and previously worked with Cullen Law – The Employment Law Firm.

Chris also has experience with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment as a Client Service Advisor. In that role Chris gave advice to members of the public on employment matters.

Chris is focused on providing thorough advice and practical options for both employers and employees. He frequently advises on disciplinary issues, performance management and restraints of trade, amongst other issues.

Chris has extensive experience at mediation and has appeared before the Employment Relations Authority and Tenancy Tribunal. He has also presented numerous seminars on a wide range of employment and health and safety related topics.

Away from work Chris is an avid football fan and spends his cold winter Saturdays turning out for VUWAFC.
